So you wanna have a lightsaber battle without costing an arm and a leg…

Wanna clash with your Jedi and Sith buddies without hurting each other or your wallet?

You may have seen ideas for DIY lightsabers for kids online, but they usually call for pool noodles and duct tape.

Unfortunately, I’ve found that using pool noodles involves three problems:

  1. Pool noodles are rather expensive (since they have to be built for water safety standards)
  2. Pool noodles tend to be seasonal items that can typically be found only in the summer
  3. Pool noodles are considerably thicker than you probably want a lightsaber to look

With that in mind, allow me to propose an alternative:

Pipe insulators can be found at nearly any hardware store year-round, they’re ridiculously inexpensive, and they come in a wide variety of widths.

Now obviously this doesn’t look anything like a lightsaber, which leads me to Part 2 of the lightsaber construction process:

Colored duct tape can also be found at most hardware stores, is fairly inexpensive, and provides a much better selection of colors than most pool noodles. Just wrap this stuff around the lightsaber “blade” area, and start battling for the fate of the galaxy!

May the Force be with you

(i hate being that person, I’m so sorry, delete my comment, but I can’t go on letting people think that look noodles are built to water safety standards. They are NOT and they are NO substitute for a proper flotation device. Please do not use them as such, and keep an eye on your children who may use them to go deeper than they are able to swim)
